Community Education

Reading

Five levels of developmental reading classes are available for adults (17 years and older) at Hawthorne Education Center.

Some are strictly Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes and others may transfer to Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC).

The beginning ABE reading classes focus on phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency while also developing vocabulary and comprehension skills.

The intermediate and advanced reading classes focus on developing vocabulary and comprehension skills, and provide much more individualized learning opportunities.

All ABE reading classes have open enrollment, so new students can enter a class at any time during the quarter. A reading placement test is required to take an ABE reading class.

All classes are free for U.S citizens, permanent U.S. residents (green card holders); fees are required for persons visiting the United States temporarily.

Please call (507) 328-4440 to schedule an appointment.

As a result of a collaboration between Rochester Public Schools and RCTC, Hawthorne’s Reading for College and Career I and Reading for College and Career II may transfer to RCTC as READ 0800 and READ 0900, respectively.

These courses have managed enrollment, so new students can enter only within the first week of each quarter.
