Community Education

Thursday February 12th, 2015
between 3:00 – 5:30
RCTC – Regional Sports Center

When you arrive at RCTC for project set-up and approval you will receive a packet of information, a pin to wear, and a lanyard nametag. In order to enter the judging area, you must wear your lanyard and name tag. Keep it with you at all times during the fair. You will be given a number and that is the spot where you set up your project. Once your project is set up you must wait for your display and safety check and approval. This is just a check to make sure you have all of your forms and do not have a safety violation. Please do not leave without having your project approved by a display and safety judge.

Safety Violations: You may NOT have these items at your project
• Living things (plants, animals, molds, or bacteria)
• Once living things – tissue samples, blood, preserved or parts of either animals or plants, Petri plates. Exceptions: teeth, hair, dried bone, sealed slides
• Lab/household chemicals including water
• Controlled/hazardous substances or devices
• Food or candy (human or animal)
• Flames or flammable materials
• No pictures of people other than yourself (unless you receive written permission and have the permission with you)

Thursday evening you will be judged for your ribbon (blue, red, or yellow) It is important to look your best (yes, you will see students in dresses and suits and ties) and you must be able to explain your project without using notes or reading your board. You certainly may refer to your board and other information, but the judges want to hear from you. It is very important that you stay with your project the entire time you are in the gym. Chairs will be provided so bring something to do (homework, book to read, iPod with head phones, cards etc) while you wait to talk to the judges. You will not be able to leave early either Thursday evening or Friday afternoon without a note from your parent/guardian.

How well you do Thursday evening sets you up for Friday afternoon. Friday afternoon you are judged for special awards and prizes. You may be visited by as many as 5 judges or you may not see any judges at all on Friday. It all depends on how many special awards and prizes you project could win. (To see the list of awards and prizes available, check out the science fair web site) Again, bring something to do or the afternoon may be very long.
