Display and Safety Check Information – 2015

The Rochester Regional Science Fair complies with the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) rules which ensure that each project display is safe and eligible for all appropriate awards and prizes.  A complete list of the ISEF Display and Safety rules and regulations can be found at http://www.societyforscience.org/page.aspx?pid=314

All students are required to complete the Display and Safety Check before leaving the display area.  Displays/projects must be approved by a Display and Safety official for the participant to be eligible to advance to the State Science Fair/ISEF or to win prize money or be eligible for special awards.

The Display and Safety Team will check each project display to make sure it is safe and eligible for special awards and prizes.  All parts/components of the display must be present during the Display and Safety Check.

The Display and Safety Check will ONLY take place during Project Set-up and Approval 3:00 – 5:30 on Thursday February 12, 2015.
For projects that are not approved and cannot be fixed immediately, special arrangements must be made for a re-check for Friday February 13, 2015 between 8:00 and 8:45 am. (ask any display and safety official to help you make the arrangements for Friday)

The most common violations are:

  • not having a credit line or cited sources for visual images (photographs, tables, charts, graphs) i.e.  ‘ photograph taken by….’ ; ‘image taken from…’ ; graph/chart/table by …’
  • sharp objects or edges on equipment
  • corporate brand name logos (i.e. Minute Maid orange juice, Aquafina water, Miracle Gro soil) even as background ‘decorations’
  • Mayo Clinic/IBM logo/name and/or mentor/teacher name
  • food as decoration

All of these are easily corrected the day of the fair or by special arrangement

Projects will be checked for violations throughout the fair.  It is important that you do not bring anything else to your display or change anything without having it approved by the Display and Safety Committee.

Changing or adding to your display without approval, or signing the Display and Safety Checklist yourself is not allowed and both are grounds for immediate disqualification and expulsion from the science fair.

Your Display and Safety Checklist should be present at your display throughout the science fair.

Almost all of the Display and Safety violations are easily fixed during project set-up and there will be a Display and Safety Table with materials you can use to correct your mistakes.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact anyone at the Display and Safety Table at the fair or e-mail Mine Cicek Ph.D., Cicek.Mine@mayo.edu
